Welcome to Tutka Bay Lodge Workshop

Dear Poets and Memoirists,
We're about to spend a long weekend together in one of the most beautiful places in North America! I'm very much looking forward to this workshop, as you are a most eclectic group of poets and writers, and many of you work in more than one genre.
We'll have a lovely weekend of writing, forest exploration, solitude and community (and the food, as some of you may already know) is out of this world.
To enhance our experience, I am developing this blog. The "pages" to your right open onto documents, readings, and exercises we will be doing during our time together. You may want to print this material and bring it with you, and our access to the blog during our Tutka Bay time may be dicey. I intend to leave the blog open after our time together so that we may continue to stay in touch and share our work.
So bring some work with you, and your notebooks and/or laptops and perhaps a flashdrive so we can share work.
This blog will be private and open only to participants and some staff members of the Tutka Bay Lodge, so anything you post here won't be shared with the whole world.

I'll see you on September 3rd!
Best wishes,
Carolyn

 * Directions to Mako’s Water Taxi and Parking
Where is your office?
As you approach the end of the Homer Spit you will see the Homer Harbor on your
left. Look to your left for a bright orange sign “Mako’s Water Taxi” and a rack with
kayaks. If you get to the Salty Dawg Saloon, a wooden lighthouse on left, you’ve
gone too far. Turn around and we are the first business on the right.
Where do we park?
There is free parking on the Spit. There is also paid parking next to our office. The
cost is $5 per day. We recommend you come to the office and drop your gear off
then look for one of those free parking places.
Is there a bathroom on the boat?
No. Relief is across the parking lot from our office. Please use the facilities before
departure. There are latrines in the Park. And if the need arises let the skipper know
and he’ll find a bush on a beach for your privacy.
What to Bring
As you start gearing up, here are some recommended items to bring:
• Mud boots (i.e. xtratuffs) or other waterproof footwear may prove useful for
hiking and beach walks
• Swim suit if you want to use the hot tub/sauna
• Warm layers; expect autumn weather
• Light gloves and a hat, especially for the water taxi
• Walking shoes (if you want to hike) and warm socks
• Mosquito repellent (just in case) and sunscreen (think positive)
• Rain gear
• Camera and binoculars (if you like)
• Small personal flashlight or headlamp
• Notebook and pen
• Laptop if you’d like to use one for your writing/notes (keep in mind that
things could get wet in the water taxi)
• Writing projects if you’re working on some – we’ve left Saturday afternoon for
you to hunker down and write (but then there’s always the hot tub and the
sauna and people to talk to and wine to consume…)
• Writing to read at the participant reading
• Dramamine if you’re prone to motion sickness: the water taxi ride only takes
20-30 minutes, but there can be some chop.
• Most cabins have shared baths, so bring appropriate “run to the bathroom”
wear.
Note that your cell phone will be taking a break with you – there’s cell phone service
in Homer, but at Tutka Bay Lodge you won’t get a signal. Internet service is limited.
Enjoy!
